Last weekend, Tom and I took a short trip to see some great backyard gardens in Colonial Williamsburg! We had taken this trip years ago and found the gates open so that folks could stroll through the backyards of these gorgeous historic homes. Tom, of course, picked up a cold on the way down Friday. He was able to rest a lot, and by Monday’s drive home, he felt human again. But no virus was going to stop us! We enjoyed the weekend the best we could.
When we returned home, we found that while we were gone, our granddaughter Abigail had taken a turn. Her mom and I sat with her in the waiting room at Children’s Hospital from 1:30 am – 6 am until we got her into a room. Unfortunately, she was having the longest panic attack I’ve ever seen. It frightened all of us.
Since the NG tube was placed, she had stopped eating and drinking orally, and after two panic attacks in the last week, she had also stopped sleeping. The poor little one had been up for 36 hours at that point.
They realized she wasn’t getting enough in her feeds and was dehydrated again as well.

But wait – there’s Good News!
She was only in the hospital for two full nights. They upped everything, and she learned she could tolerate it. Abigail came home with us that night for a sleepover at Grandma’s and Bop-Bop’s. Sadly, she panicked and was afraid to sleep all night until she finally passed out. But the next morning she was bright-eyed and ready to take on life again!
Over the last few days, she has been taking Baby Steps, slowly eating a little and drinking a little. That plus her feeds has made her feel great inside. She has kept me in the kitchen making food for everyone, and she has tasted everything along the way. We took her to the grocery store, and she picked out fresh fruits and Mancini bread rolls. I found the tiniest of dishes, a cup we brought back from Portugal that is a tiny coffee mug, and Tom’s grandmother’s tiny children’s tea pot. I think it helped that the dishes were so small and not overwhelming. Her mom said this morning she was eating peanuts and as happy as a lark! I pray we keep going in this direction.
Thank you to all who have been praying for her. I’m sorry if I didn’t respond to everyone. Just know that the outpouring of love and support means so much to all of us.
I hope your Mother’s Day is awesome. I know we are very grateful this year.
