Art and Motherhood

It’s funny how even when our children are grown and independent, we’re still sometimes called upon to be moms again.

My daughter Brittany had surgery this week. I hadn’t been that nervous for a very long time. I’m aware that emotional eating has always been my coping mechanism, so I made it a point to make a smart choice at the hospital cafeteria by ordering a veggie omelet. That worked out so well, that then I thought, “I think I need more fuel in this stressful situation, so maybe I’ll do what the hobbits do and have a second breakfast.” This consisted of yogurt, fruit, and granola – not bad, right?

Then one hour turned into two, and I couldn’t help myself. When given the choice of splitting a donut with Tom or getting one of my own… of course, I chose the latter. By then, the cashier knew me and was comforting me. On our way back to the family waiting room, we stopped by the gift shop for chocolate. As I was deciding between possible alternatives, the cashier said they also had Sarris chocolate! There was no contest – I immediately grabbed a crispy milk chocolate bar.

Let me tell you, I have been doing so well with healthy eating, but that day ruined me! The good news is Brittany’s surgery was successful. I’ve spent the last few days being a mom again to my 39-year-old daughter and taking care of her. No matter how grown-up the kids get, to me, being a mom is truly the best part of life.

So, just as we finished up last week at the AHN Montour Sports Complex Home Show, we headed straight to the hospital for my daughter’s surgery and post-op recovery. But the Barnicotts never miss a beat, and we’re now at this weekend’s Home Show at the AHN Cool Springs Sports Complex in Bethel Park.

Somehow, we managed to get the special ornaments made for “Our Lady of Liberty.” With each ornament sold, a donation will be made to the Bethel Park Community Foundation. I will have 50 ornaments at the show with me, and I will be happy to sign them and personalize each one for you (as well as any of the other gift items at my booth). Remember those birthdays, anniversaries, and graduations coming up and give a gift that will be treasured for a lifetime!

I hope to see you at the show!
