Algarve Beach, in southern Portugal, was full of breathtaking waves and rugged, gorgeous rock formations. A walk along this windswept beach is sure to bring you joy.
It was in the spring of the 1st year of the war. Just like all of us my heart was breaking listening to the stories of the people and the strength they were portraying every day to protect their country and their people.
Young couples saying goodbye as they parted. Mothers and children fleeing while their husbands and sons stayed to fight.
It was a raw moment and yet you could feel their unity; their love for what they believed in. It was an emotion like no other.
I just had to do something. People here were writing songs and I thought I could use my art.
As I sat in traffic leading up to the Liberty Bridge, listening to the news, I thought of how I could represent Ukraine. In dead-stopped traffic, I googled sunflowers and came across the heart-shaped ones that you could buy seeds for. I thought of their colors, blue and yellow. I was already seeing sunflowers representing Ukraine and I thought I could paint one with some dew on it in the shape of a tear to represent the sorrow and the loss.
Yet the sunflower wasn’t alone. Just like the Ukrainians, standing proud with the rest of its people. Some losing their lives, yet others growing up to be strong.
When I pulled into my driveway, Tom was sitting on the porch. I got out of the car and excitedly told him my idea. I literally sat down that night and started to paint it. I finished it late the next day. Whenever I flow like that, it practically paints itself. I truly am just a vessel.

An artist-enhanced archival giclée print is a limited edition print that is reproduced digitally with a process utilizing six specially formulated archival pigmented inks and a sophisticated color matching system. The paper used is archival quality and acid free. The giclée reproduction system produces prints that are superior in color and likeness to Linda’s original paintings. They will not fade or discolor and will last a lifetime. Linda adds further value to her giclée prints by personally enhancing them by hand with rich, soft pastels and strong vibrant colors.
Linda Barnicott is very happy to add prints using this quality reproduction method to her line of nostalgic limited edition prints.
